Salary Cap Analysis FAQ

How Salary Caps Work

What is a salary cap in sports?

A salary cap is a limit on how much a team can spend on player salaries. The salary cap is set in the collective bargaining agreement, or CBA, which is negotiated by the league and the players’ association. For example, the National Football League and the NFL Players Association agree on the CBA that lays out the salary cap for each year the CBA covers.

How does a salary cap work?

The salary cap set in a league’s CBA is the limit on what a team can spend on player salaries that year. The NFL has a hard cap, which means no team can spend more than the salary cap. The NBA has a soft cap, which means teams can exceed the cap using exceptions, but they pay a luxury tax if their payroll goes above the tax level.

What is a collective bargaining agreement in sports?

A collective bargaining agreement is the contract between a league and its players’ union that sets the rules for pay. It covers the salary cap, minimum salaries, free agency, and contract rules, and it is renegotiated when it expires.

 What sports have salary caps?

The NFL, NHL, and WNBA have hard salary caps, meaning teams cannot go over them. The NBA has a soft cap: teams can exceed it using exceptions, but they pay a luxury tax and face extra restrictions above set “apron” levels. MLB has no salary cap, though teams that spend above a set threshold pay a competitive balance tax. MLS uses a salary budget with exceptions such as Designated Players, who can be paid more than the budget allows.

What is the luxury tax in sports?

The luxury tax is a penalty that teams pay for payroll above a set threshold. In the NBA, teams over the tax level, which is $200.428 million for the 2026 to 2027 season, pay a tax on the amount above it. MLB’s version is called the competitive balance tax.

What is the minimum salary in the NFL?

For the 2026 season, the minimum salary for a rookie on the 53 man roster is $885,000, and the salary cap is $301.2 million per team. The cap rose from $279.2 million in 2025.

What is the minimum salary in the NBA?

For the 2026 to 2027 season, the NBA rookie minimum salary is $1,357,763, and a player with five years of experience earns at least $2,845,883. Minimum salaries rise with each year of experience.

What is the NBA salary cap for 2026 to 2027?

The NBA salary cap is $164.961 million per team for the 2026 to 2027 season. The minimum team salary is $148.465 million, the tax level is $200.428 million, the first apron is $209.015 million, and the second apron is $221.686 million.
